PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Welcome, Dear Cyberspace Visitor,

Thank you for making a metaphorical pit stop at the glorious Ebell of Los Angeles.

You have indeed found one of the Seven Wonders of Los Angeles.  This place, this marvelous, astounding, vibrant,  place continues to attract and enchant a plethora of
fabulous women.  Women who trade in millions of dollars, women who write, women who mother, women who paint, women who sing, women who act, women who judge, women who doctor, women who counsel, women who govern, women who grandmother,
women who loll around, women who shop, women who play tennis, women who drive children, to name just a few of the things our members spend their time doing when they are not at the Ebell.  They were called here by the siren walls- in the guise of friends and neighbors- that housed more than a century of women before them.  Once they passed through the garden gates, they knew they had found a place they could love, again.

And if those walls could talk, what stories they could tell about Amelia Earhart,  the Queen of Romania, Shirley Temple, Judy Garland, Beyonce, yes Beyonce -before she did “Put a Ring on It.” The shining edifice that is the  Ebell is in a zone between Somewhere In Time and Back to the Future and if you let it, it will transport you there. A monthly dinner might bring to mind dining on the Titanic or the Orient Express.  A Monday lunch could call up Howard’s End.  It is a veritable caravansary of ideas, people and places.

Beyond being our outside love interest, the building, like the programs it fosters,  becomes a focus, a passion, a daydream.  It evokes an unspoken  promise to keep it
and everything around it, beautiful, healthy and forever giving, much like the women who support it.  And like those mythic women of mighty tales who knew no obstacles, we band together-sharing our secrets and our sorrows.  It is that confluence of women which makes the Ebell such a special place.

And so we march to the tune of that different drummer, the women who grow ideas and
harvest them..  The women who see possibilities rather than limitations. The women who like being with other women unlike themselves.  The Ebell is not only a place where women can be, it is a place where they can flourish, not to mention have fun.

The Ebell women are evolved and involved.  They want to make a difference in their community and in the world at large.  They guide our scholarship program and our grants to organizations that assist women. They push and they prod the Ebell to do more, to be relevant, to cause a dazzling spot of light on the earth when seen from outer space.  They want to be heard and to leave something of value behind.

How is all this possible? Because there is an incredible  staff, from the General Manager to the Club receptionist, from the Theatre Manager to the maintenance staff, from the graphics designer to the Executive Chef,  that loves the place as much as its members do. Creative, inventive, entrepreneurial, totally enwrapped by the mantra of great service, the Ebell staff is cherished by the membership.  Come and join us.  It’s a wonderful ride.
